Pillars
Extract structured information from document sets and ask source-grounded questions.
Pillars turns a set of source documents into structured Tables that your team can review. Extracted values and Clara answers include citations so you can return to the supporting material.
Use a Pillar for work such as contract reviews, disclosure packs, due diligence, or any matter where the same questions must be asked across several documents.
A Pillar is either standalone or bound to one Matter. Matter Pillars are shared with that matter from creation, including when Clara creates them.
How Pillars works
- Create a Pillar for the document set, from Pillars or from a matter's Overview.
- Add the source documents you are permitted to use.
- Create a Table and define the fields you need as columns.
- Run extraction to populate the Table.
- Review each value against its citation.
- Ask Clara questions about the Pillar and check the cited answers.
Standalone and matter Pillars

Create a matter Pillar from Overview when the document pack sits on that file. The creation form preselects the current matter. Clearing the matter creates a standalone Pillar instead.
Share to matter
A standalone Pillar can be moved onto a matter with Share to matter in the header or Settings.
- Sharing moves the whole Pillar, including tables, results, and uploaded documents.
- The Pillar keeps its identity and citations.
- Matter access replaces the old standalone grants.
- The originating Clara conversation stays private.
- Sharing cannot be reversed or redirected to another matter.
Already shared Pillars show Saved to matter instead of grant controls.

Plan limits
Usage allowances are measured per user each month. The maximum number of columns applies to each Table.

Check your workspace usage before running a large extraction.
Review with citations
Select an extracted value to open its citation in the source document. Read enough surrounding text to check definitions, qualifications, schedules, and cross-references before marking the value as reviewed.
An empty value can mean that the available source did not support an answer. Check the source and the column instruction before rerunning extraction.
Ask Clara about a Pillar
Open Clara alongside a Pillar to ask questions across the permitted source set. Clara reads the current table cells directly and includes citations to the material used. Follow each citation and verify the answer before relying on it.
Access remains controlled by workspace permissions and Matter or standalone Pillar grants. A group used for queue routing does not grant access to a Pillar or its documents.

Pillar extractions and Clara answers are drafts, not legal advice. The responsible reviewer must check the source documents, missing material, applicable law, and the significance of each finding.
